The Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs has an opening for a Student Spanish Circle Worker in the Center for Democracy and Citizenship.
This is a part-time off-campus fall term position for an undergraduate student.
The Hubert H. Humphrey Institute ranks among the top 15 professional schools of public affairs at public universities in the country; our program concentration in nonprofit management ranks fifth in the nation.
The Institute is widely recognized for its role in examining public issues and shaping public policy at the local, state, national, and international levels, and for providing leadership and management expertise to public and nonprofit organizations.
Employment responsibilities:
This position is located off campus. The Jane Addams School for Democracy is a community-based education and civic engagement initiative on the West Side of St. Paul. The worker will work with staff to help facilitate a bilingual adult Spanish Circle. The circle includes a bilingual group discussion and then pair learning time for groups to work on such learning topics as the US citizenship exam, language literacy, and computer literacy. The position overview is as follows:
-40% Assist in interpreting and facilitating group -30% Assist in connecting with and working with students from the University of Minnesota and other educational settings -20% Work with others on small-group learning goals -10% Other projects as assigned
Essential qualifications:
Required: -Work Study award available -at least have a freshman-level student status -Fluent in spoken and written Spanish -Some formal or informal experience interpreting between English and Spanish -Interest in working with adults in a creative educational setting
Preferred qualifications:
Preferred: -Experience facilitating or speaking in front of groups -Experience in assisting others in language learning -Some knowledge of St. Paul and its neighborhoods
Appointment details:
Part-time, $9.00 per hour starting hourly rate.
