Job description:

The Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs ranks among the top 15 professional schools of public affairs at public universities in the country; our program concentration in nonprofit management ranks fifth in the nation.

The Institute is widely recognized for its role in examining public issues and shaping public policy at the local, state, national, and international levels, and for providing leadership and management expertise to public and nonprofit organizations.

Employment responsibilities:

The Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs continually accepts nominations of and applications from individuals for research positions that may open during the year. All applications are reviewed as openings occur, and individual applicants are invited to interview when their skills or areas of expertise match a specific opening.

These often are temporary positions of three to six months in duration. Appointments may be for varying percentages of time (up to 100%). Salary is commensurate with qualifications and availability of funding and will be negotiated at the time of hire. All hires will be made on an annually renewable basis. Renewals will be contingent upon satisfactory performance, continued availability of funding, and consistency with the Humphrey Institute's mission and program priorities.

Research associates work on research projects in any of several capacities, including that of principal investigator, and are expected to be engaged with faculty and graduate students. Research fellows usually work under the direction of the principal investigator to implement the research project.

Essential qualifications:

Academic - Earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degree required for appointment as a research associate (9702) or senior research associate (9701). Master's degree required for appointment as a research fellow (9703) or senior research fellow (9743).

Experience - Relevant previous research experience in some field of public affairs. In addition, candidates should provide evidence of the following skills and abilities: strong interpersonal skills in group and individual settings, strong written and oral communication skills, ability to work independently and manage a variety of research projects, and ability to manage multiple competing priorities.

Preferred qualifications:

Preferred skills will be determined when a specific research opening becomes available.
