Washington D.C. Careers ExplorationTrip - March 2008

The Office of Career Services is happy to announce a unique opportunity for up to 30 Humphrey students - a field trip to Washington, D.C. to explore public service careers. The trip is scheduled for the first part of spring break, March 17-20, 2008.

Registration dates: January 28-February 11, 2008

READ ON for more information on:
1. The goals of this year's D.C. Careers Exploration trip.
2. A draft schedule of events.
3. The optional independent study credit.
4. Cost estimates
5. How and when to register.

1. The goals of the trip include:

  • Introducing students to a variety of D.C. organizations
  • Introducing organizations to the Humphrey Institute and its students
  • Learning about programs, application processes and future opportunities in D.C.
  • Connecting students with Humphrey alumni.
  • Because of the timing of the trip, it may not necessarily be a good way to find a specific job or internship.
2. Schedule of events:
  • Visits with federal, nonprofit, private and thinktank organizations, as well as panels of organizational representatives will take place Monday through Thursday, March 17 to 20th, 2008. You can review our 2008 DC Visit draft schedule.
  • Click here to see a list of Potential Organizations to visit.
  • NOTE: If you know of an organization (and, if possible, a contact name) that you would like to add to our list of organizational visits, email Martha Krohn by Friday, Dec 7, 2007.
  • We will meet with 2-3 organizations/panels each day for the 4 days of the trip.
  • A tour of Congress is planned - with a panel of congressional employers.
  • Alumni-student reception to be held the evening of Tuesday, March 18.

3. Optional independent study credit:

  • If you are interested in receiving 1 credit (S-N only) for the DC experience and your analysis of it, please talk to Lynne Schuman.
  • We will be working with a faculty member to determine the work to be done for credit. It will include a journal during the trip and a short analytic piece following the experience.
  • To make an appointment with Lynne, go to our on-line appointment system on the Career Services website.

4. Cost Estimates:

  • Transportation to and from DC. Check airfares online (airfares are currently around $350-400). Consider driving as a group. Flying into Reagan National Airport (DCA) is recommended, as it is faster and less costly to get into DC from DCA.
  • Transportation within DC - via the Metro. Metro costs within the city: $6-8 per day.
  • Food: Budget $35 a day.
  • Lodging: Budget hotels/B&B's around $100-200 per night for a double room OR stay with alumni who have offered to host HHH students.
  • For more projected cost information, see our handout of 2008 DC trip costs.

5. Registration:

  • Registration dates: January 28-Feb 11, 2008
  • Up to 30 students may register - if more than 30 students are interested, there will be a waiting list.
  • Registrants must make a firm commitment to participate.
  • To register - fill out the form (available in early January) and email it to Martha Krohn (mkrohn@umn.edu).
  • SECURITY CLEARANCE : Because of the need for many DC organizations to do a security clearance for all visitors, we will be asking you for various security information on the application form. See what this information entails here.

We hope you decide to join us on this fun and informative trip! If you have any further questions, please contact Lynne or Martha.
